Food

Part of my work as a travel journalist involves writing about the food and wines of Andalucía. It's always been my desire that guests staying at our villas should experience the best of our local cuisine - that's even if you intend your holiday to be a mostly self-catering event. A special meal out with friends and family is too precious to be spent at the wrong restaurant. So awaiting you at your villa you'll find a list of the best local tapas bars and restaurants.

Tapas bars

One of the most enjoyable ways to eat out in Andalucía, and a fun way to experience the best of its local dishes, is to hop from one tapas bar to the next. Ronda has many colourful little tapas bars, most of them not in the least touristy and nearly all with 'in house' specialities. You can order tapas at both lunch and dinner whilst by ordering larger plates or raciones you'll have the makings of a more substantial meal. Current leader of the pack, with exquisitely imaginative food, is Tragatapas in a pedestrian street close to the Parador.

Ronda restaurants

In your villa's guest information pack you'll find a detailed list of what we consider to be our finest local restaurants. In Ronda you're spoiled for choice, especially if you avoid the more touristy restaurants close to the bull ring. Our favourite Ronda restaurant, where you can expect beautifully presented food in a very pretty setting, is Restaurante Almocabar. It's tucked away in the pretty San Francisco quarter of the old town with alfresco dining in summer.

White Village restaurants

All of our local villages have one or more decent places to eat. In Montecorto expect simple, home cooked dishes at both La Parada and La Piscina whilst in the neighbouring village of El Gastor our favourite place for dining out is La Posada. In Grazalema the lively main square has several reliable places to eat whilst El Simancón is the place for a really special meal out. In Zahara de la Sierra, a beautiful village reached via a serpentine drive along the lakeside, our top recommendation is Al Lago. The restaurant has a terrace overlooking the Zahara lake and is a perfect place for a memorable al fresco meal.

In house catering

One of the unique things about staying at one of our villas is that you'll have the opportunity to have home cooked food prepared for you by our lovely housekeeper. Nearly all ingredients are locally sourced and many of them organically grown: this is genuine Slow Food. Try a delicious tortilla española prepared with free range eggs, delicious albondigas in a rich almond sauce or a special paella. If you wish to join your housekeeper to see how it's all prepared, no problem ... she can do so in the kitchen of your villa. If you have something to celebrate, a special cake can be baked.
